Welcome to a belated Friday Fishbird Flicks 📽 – wherein I watch a movie that everyone has already seen, and talk very briefly about it so we can get on with other things 🤩.
This week I delved back into the sumptuous world that J.K Rowling created, and watched 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts : The Crimes of Grindelwald” & I gave it 7 Fishbird’s out of 10.
Now it’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen the first Fantastic Beasts movie, however all I remember of the first instalment was that I thought it was pretty but boring. I wanted to watch the follow up film purely out of nostalgia for the Potterverse.
After seeing ‘Episode 2’, I’d have to say that this movie was still pretty … but boring.
I loved all the creatures and magic & thought the effects were gorgeous. Johnny Depp shone as Grindelwald, even under all that talcum powder & Jude Law was a surprisingly good fit as Albus Dumbledore.
I was fonder of Eddie Redmayne as Newt in this picture, however his storyline just left me feeling a lot of meh. I had no care for the love interest between Newt and Tina, and thought it just got in the way of a lot of potential for insight into Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s history.
I would have loved to have seen this movie from Albus Dumbledore’s perspective & have Newt as a side character, showcasing his creatures as beautiful filler – I think it would have generated a lot more connection & heart.
I paired the movie with a few glasses of Bad Henry Cabernet Sauvignon & tried unsuccessfully to wingardium leviosa chocolates into my mouth while patting a phoenix. 🎥🎞
