Friday Fishbird Flicks 📽 – wherein I watch a movie that everyone has already seen, and talk very briefly about it so we can get on with other things 🤩.
This week I watched the 1987 movie “Masters of the Universe” starring Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Meg Foster, Courteney Cox, Billy Barty, Chelsea Field and Robert Duncan McNeill.
I think it’s better if you go into this movie not knowing anything about He-Man. That way, when the stormtroopers appear in the giant Skeleton’s palace and start shooting lasers at the triangle man in the loin cloth, you won’t even care.
Not once did I hear “by the power of Grayskull” – Prince Adam was He-Man the whole time!
Dolph Lundgren rivals Kristen Stewart for most expressionless face in a motion picture. He was obviously cast purely due to his muscles and yellow hair.
This was an 80s mash up of left over Star Wars props, Jim Henson masks and the director’s love of synthesisers.
Within one parsecion, He-Man has told Courteney Cox all about Skeletor and their mission on Earth, they’ve shared some fried chicken and she’s all in. Vortexes to alternate universes must have been pretty common in 80s America!
I had to watch this in two parts as despite the costumes and comforting old-school special effects, I was so bored!
I paired this movie with a few glasses of Devil’s Corner Pinot Noir, put a leash on Battle Cat & took a hovercraft to Eternia to see a man about a castle.
4 Fishbirds out of 10.
